Richmond uses only water based lacquers and paints

Richmond’s water-based policy was introduced a number of years ago to eradicate the use of traditional paints and lacquers which emit high levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short and long term adverse health and environmental effects.

The introduction of water-based products means Richmond has vastly reduced the use of VOCs within the supply chain to a minimum practicable level therefore reducing the demand on oil based products and the impact to the ambient environment, as well as that of the global community.

The switch to water-based paints and lacquers has had the added benefit of eliminating CFCs, a common industrial product used in traditional solvents.  Although chemically inert in the lower atmosphere CFCs are broken down into their components by the stronger sunlight (UV) at higher altitudes.  It is the chlorine formed in this process that causes damage to the ozone.

The use of CFCs in Richmond’s processes has been severely curtailed in line with the demand to help protect the Ozone layer.
